Northern Illinois is in the migratory path for American White Pelicans, and usually by late March or early April of each year they’ll stop for a spell in a handful of local lakes. This particular group of 50 or so pelicans had split off from the rest of the bunch (up to a couple hundred) and had gone fishin’ . It’s fascinating to watch pelicans do their group fishing as they swim close together and herd the fish, and the leader of the group then dips its head in the water, and the rest of the bunch follows suit until all of their heads are under water trying to snag a fish in their big ol’ bills. Synchronized fishing at its best!
