A Great Egret strikes a pose before lunging for a snack on a warm evening a couple of weeks ago before the cold moved in. The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audobon Society which was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers. The long plumes that grow from its back during breeding season led to great egrets almost hunted to extinction in the late 1800s, which sparked conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds.
